It's time that we completely wake up as a civilization to reality as it is: EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED.

Carl Sagan said it decades ago, "the new consciousness is developing which sees the Earth as a single organism, and recognizes an organism at war with itself is doomed."

We must evolve from using war to get our needs met. This means every one of us. Starting with the language you use. Become aware of all of the ways that you use military and warfare lexicon in your daily life - do you really want to war if you are here to create peace?

From this recognition we must build an economy of connection, of relationships. An economy of peace, rather than one of war. Simply that.

I am particularly inspired by ideas that are born out of the recognition of the vast intelligence in all life on the planet which humanity is continually co-evolving with.

The book "Botany of Desire - A Plant's-Eye View of the World" authored by Michael Pollan, and the movie based on the book, both point to the reality that there is much more intelligence embedded in the community of plants within which we live than most societies have ever imagined. Such thinking demonstrates the possibilities of the symbiotic relationship between plants and humans.

Gaia Herbs is a company which has moved far beyond this as a theory, they put these ideas into practice through the way that they cultivate and share the healing power of medicinal plants.

The Founder of Gaia Herbs Rick Scalzo wrote a free electronic book with Greg Cumberland called "Meetings and Awakenings - The Coevolution of Plants and People."

"Certain Species of hummingbirds have co-evolved bills for extracting nectar from flowers whose shape is uniquely suited to allow the hummingbird optimal access that assures the hummingbird departs with the plant's pollen and/or seeds. The same is true with certain milk thistles and butterflies with specially adapted mouthparts. If you're paying attention to what's going on around the planet, and don't have your head in the sand, you can see that things are rather chaotic in the human mind globally.

People have two reactions to such chaos - surf the chaos, or attempt to hold on to old identities during the transition.

It's not unlike a metamorphosis - there's a liminal state between caterpillar and butterfly where neither form is readily apparent.

How we steer our attention through such transitions is particularly important.

A recent post by Tom Kenyon on the matter is titled "The Emergence of Multiple Chaotic Nodes" wherein a number of insightful and helpful points are made for people interested in the evolution of consciousness at this time.

We're reminded to return to love, to the heart:

From our perspective, the threshold for an Initiate from the lower vibrational worlds into the upper worlds is, first and foremost, through the heart. This transit of consciousness is essentially an inner journey from the lower chakras to the higher chakras. It is only when an Initiate both transcends and transforms his or her personal fixation on security, sex and power that the upward spiral opens. And the entrance into this upward spiral of consciousness occurs when the heart chakra becomes energetically open and permeable.

The paradox and the difficulty is that you live in a dualistic universe, and virtually any action you take is met by a counter-force. This paradox and difficulty is like a metaphorical grain of sand in an oyster; it is irritating. But through the process of self-evolution, the irritation (i.e. duality) becomes a pearl, and paradoxically, something of value emerges from that which was problematic. But each Initiate must create this pearl of self-transformation for him or herself. No religion, no master, no teacher or guru can do it for you.

It may sound too simplistic but, in our experience, the greatest evolutionary catalyst, and the greatest vibratory field of safety to bridge transition states (such as the one you are collectively entering), is through the heart, your heart.

Regardless of any of our interpretations of 2012, what it means, what it doesn't mean, what it is, what it is not - all these are simply interpretations. To add some perspective, it is valuable to consider the points of view of the culture which speaks of this time as being significant. A recent article shares the points of view of the Mayan Elders.

I find much of what they say to be advice from a timeless perspective, and of value regardless of the epoch or context which they are saying it.

Here is one excerpt which stood out to me:

"Meditation and spiritual practice are good, but also action. It's very important to be clear about who you are, and also about your relation to the Earth. Develop yourself according to your own tradition and the call of your heart. But remember to respect differences, and strive for unity. Or are they active, giving structure to the Akashic Field, the quantum vacuum, to create experiences that reflect them? Evolutionary Leaders gather at UCLA

I went to "Evolutionary Leaders" event - with all the "Who's Who" in the "conscious movement"

Saw many friends - and encountered some lovely "leaders" who I have met in the past - Lynne Twist, Arielle Ford, Debbie Ford, Michael Beckwith, Steve McIntosh, Barbara Marx Hubbard, Gregg Braden, etc. and some who I had not Bruce Lipton, Duane Elgin, Don Beck and others. A very broad spectrum of some of the luminaries of the movement, all at once in one event.

I met Barbara Marx Hubbard 20 Years ago - when we worked together on a project for a week. It was during the period that much of this work for me became very clear in my life...

That said, here we are 20 years later - all the "leaders" coming together to inspire "evolutionary leaders."

It was amazing to have all those people together on the stage at the same time - and in the seats in the hall.
Something about it though still rang of an "old paradigm" energy - leaders inspiring leaders - and people on the stage "delivering a message of urgency" to the people in the audience. I would have liked it for all of us to be in a massive circle together...

That said - it felt like an important step for all these leaders on the stage - for them to come together in solidarity and connect and work together and appear on stage together as a unified field. They demonstrated the unity of connectedness that needs to be embodied now. Even so, there was something about the way it is was done -the format, the assumption that a "message needs to be given" etc. which I feel is something from another timeline of activation, which we just stepped out of last night - and into a new timeline of collective embodiment of the evolutionary impulse.

Yet what last night represented to me was a culmination, a graduation of sorts, for all the people on the stage to be celebrated, acknowledged, connected, etc. so that the baton can be handed off. This was not unlike a ritual which marked the end of an era, a dynamic so that it could gracefully put to rest with sacred intention and honor. Once done we could move on. But this effort is the latest and best from this extraordinary group of people...who are some of the most important thought leaders of our time.

Meanwhile - check out the website - it actually has some very cool stuff on it - especially the "Evolutionary Leaders Toolkit" which appears to be a very succinct, and valuable document for all of us working together - in whatever area of life we live.

I also had a nice chat with Andrew Cohen - what a sweetheart - he's a little intense, yet very sweet energy... when I made a comment something to the effect "see you in the dream" he nudged me and said "it's all real!" - yes, another adjustment - I guess he's on the same team as all of my other spiritual guides - and filling in where you they left off... worry not - Greg nudges toward full awakening continue from all fronts from the cosmos!

The Art of Jumping Time Lines

Many of us are not aware that there are many different concepts and understandings about how time works, and what exactly is involved.

The very popularity of the book "The Power of Now" and other teachings by Eckart Tolle are evidence of this reality.

That said, my concept of time, and how reality plays out individually and collectively, forward/backward/upward/downward has been continuously shifting of late.

Along these lines, I found an article called "The Art of Jumping Time Lines" to be very helpful in adding shape and color to my new experiences of time/space/reality. I trust you will enjoy and feel a new sense of living after reading some of this material. Here's the first part of the article:

"Although it may seem paradoxical to some, your timeline—your life—is only one of many simultaneous possibilities. And it is quite possible, indeed it is your birthright, to alter your timeline and the potentials of your life."

"Your culture, for various reasons, has hypnotized you into believing that you are limited to one timeline. In this message we shall endeavor to discuss our understanding of timelines and how you can change them."

Warriors of love and light or Servants of Love and Light?

I know that many of our circle will call us "light warriors" "love warriors" etc. And in many respects the "peace" movement is a war on war, the environmental movement a war on environmental aggressors...

Yet in putting down our swords, we find that light and love are more effective "war free."

In my spiritual work of dealing with beings and entities of all sorts and dimensions, kind and not-so-kind. Of late I have found that effectively dealing with them has been to embody soveriegn light and conscious connection to source while firmly informing them of the conscious connection to source that we share, and that there is a oneness that trumps any dark agenda or malevolence, war, struggle, fight etc.

Which has all inspired me to explore new ideas and ways to express as a servant of light and love, rather than a warrior of light and love.In other words, when there is no fight, there is no fight.

Humanity is not limited to one Gender, so how can God be?

We know that humanity is not limited by gender, and therefore the Divine must not be limited as well. Yet somehow the Abrahamic religions overlook this by embracing a dominant, male, distant and often violent view of Divinity.

Divinity pervades all nature, and the connection with all life. The views that incorporate the feminine traits of nurturing strength, connectedness of all life, divinity of embodiment and our world as a sacred manifestation are also views that frequently embrace a view that includes the feminine archetypes connected with God.

A couple of books - Chalice and the Blade and Not In His Image elaborate on this truth, and give a history of how we forgot Nature and the Divine Feminine in modern Religious life.

I'm very keen on the recognition that to revere nature fully incorporating the feminine into our archetypes and spirituality is essential.

"As I share my new message of unconditional Love with people during some of the evening talks, I have learned that most people have no idea of what I am actually talking about. By this, I mean the subject of Love. People everywhere are familiar and comfortable with "personal" love, but few are aware of the huge leap in consciousness that is required to live within the framework of "unconditional" Love. This could also be known as "universal" Love. When a person says to me, "Oh, I love myself," and they are smoking a cigarette, I have come to realise that they have no idea of the magnitude of "universal" Love. It is not even a concept for them. And this is okay; it is certainly no crime! For me, it has been a lesson in communication. Let me explain this: smoking is a personal choice, but you cannot express a higher Love for yourself while attacking your physical body. And smoking, like so many of our addictive habits, is a definite attack on yourself. Repetitive self-criticism is also self-attack. Smoking introduces toxic substances into the body, while self-criticism creates toxic substances within the body."

I encountered a book online that has some different views called "The Collapsing Tower: Birth Pangs of Post Ego Civilization" by Robert Lorenz, PhD. who is a professor at UCLA Graduate School of Professional Psychology.

Here's an excerpt from one of his newsletters:

Psycho-Spiritual Consequences of Solar Maximum

In a channeled work of Tom Kenyon called The Holon of Ascension, in discussing the breach in the magnetosphere (Internet, January 28, 2009), writes:

It (the breach) is allowing, and will allow, large volumes of the sun to enter. This will increase magnetic storms, disruption of telecommunications, disruptions in bioelectric circuitry (such as human nervous systems), and climate change. The results of this breach and the increased charging of the magnetosphere will increase over the next several years.

Our focus in this communication is not upon the negative impacts of this breach, but upon the positive effects it opens for those who are ready.

Your subtle energy body, which was known as the KA by the ancient Egyptians and called the etheric body by the Yogis, is highly sensitive to, and affected by solar plasma. An increase in the flow and quality of solar streams increases the vibratory rate of the KA body. This is a very beneficial and auspicious opportunity for those who are consciously participating in their ascension process. Let us be precise by what we mean by the term ascension, because it has many different connotations and ways of being viewed.

By ascension we simply mean a movement upward in consciousness…You begin to see through the maya, or illusion of this world, which is created through the dance of subatomic particles and into a configuration of what you call matter. Through the ascension process you realize that you are the creator of your experience of that which you call “the world”. It does not mean that you leave this world, but it does mean that you transcended it – while still being a part of it – for you see through the lens of perception that life is a movie that you are projecting.

One could say that you are at a crossroads. As the solar streams enter into your magnetosphere, the KA bodies of all humans will increase in vibration. But for some, this will lead to disturbances and dissolution, while for others it will lead to ascension – a movement upward in consciousness.

This communication is specifically for those individuals who have chosen the upward spiral. Your challenge in these times is to allow the activation of your KA body to move you upward, even as many around you seem to be spiraling downward. It is, essentially, a question of vibration, joined with expectation and belief. It is the union of these three that births the creative impulse for a new destiny.

What do we mean by this?

It takes tremendous energy to transcend or transmute a negative condition or limitation that has been placed upon one. You have been collectively hypnotized into a view of reality that is fixed, confined, limiting, and nothing short of imprisonment. When you see through the lies and the manipulations, the old world does not look the same and yet the perception of the lies does not free one from them. They have a life of their own and a tendency to continue. It takes new energy – an increased vibratory rate – to overcome the lethargy and inertia that are intrinsic to your cultural limitations. This is a gift of the solar streams – the solar plasma that is flowing and will flow in greater quantities into your magnetosphere – for they will increase the vibratory rate of your KA body.

But here is the “cross-hair, shall we say, in “the sight” of your destiny. For those of you who accept, or are at least beginning to see through the lies and manipulations that have been imposed upon you and have made a choice to move upward into the ascension process, this activation of the KA body is a beautiful, exquisite miracle to behold, for your life will be graced with the power to transcend your own limitations in ways that have not be available to you before. It shall be as if the cosmos itself is joining you in the dance of your freedom.

But for those who do not choose to live upward in consciousness – who choose to remain imprisoned by the limitations, who seek to blame others for their misfortune, who choose to find scapegoats for their lack of happiness, for those who insist on living the old world of conflict – this increased vibration of their KA body will not be a blessing; it will be experienced as a curse. Because they will have to work very hard to keep things the way they are…

From our perspective, we see this situation escalating over the next several years, and we would characterize it as a dual state in which many of you will ascend, meaning move upward, while others will move into dissolution, a falling apart. This is, essentially, based on personal choice.

This is a very important point, for us, and we wish to convey it with as much clarity as possible. Each of you has the response-ability to choose the thoughts and the creations you desire. Some of you will choose freedom – because you cannot stand being contained any longer – the lies are too great a burden to perpetuate. Others of you will choose imprisonment – for the fear of freedom and the responsibility for personal choice is too much to bear.

This is a split in the road of evolution.

As your realities simultaneously dissolve and re-create themselves, and by that we refer to the economic challenges you are facing, and the ecological and social challenges you are facing some of you may experience very difficult times. But never lose sight of the fact that you are the creator of your life, and you can re-create it at any moment, regardless of the circumstances. Those who manipulate you do so through fear and perpetuation of cultural limitations – the belief that your life is dependent upon certain external factors.

What you will discover in the ascension process is that these external factors are actually projections from your own deepest consciousness. They are flickers on a movie screen, and you can change them in mind-bending quickness when you change them from the source rather than the effect, and the source is your very mind itself.

It’s important to understand that the breach in the magnetosphere only sets the stage for the massive changes under discussion. The driving force behind them is the progressive increase in solar energy impinging on our planet as we approach solar maximum. Thus 2010 - 2012 will be a great catalyst for transcendence for those who are doing the work and a great catalyst for dissolution and insanity for those who are attempting to hold onto the old way of egoic domination.

“Doing the work” means clearing the etheric body of old emotional reaction patterns that comprise the pain-body, sub-personalities, and mechanisms of control and being right derived from your Enneagram ego-type. The methods of doing this have been discussed in prior Newsletters. Of particular significance is the method of transmutation—rather than acting on negative emotions, you can transmute them to positive Flow. This takes practice, and you must start NOW if you have not already done so. There’s no time to waste in useless pursuits and ego gratifications. You must examine the sanity of your goals. If they aren’t in line with, or are opposed to, spiritual evolvement you’re not just wasting precious time. You’re putting yourself in extreme jeopardy. This isn’t a dress rehearsal. It’s the real thing, and only you can determine whether you survive and evolve or not. The higher spiritual beings who have gone before us have placed our destiny in our own hands. It’s now incumbent upon us to choose our destinies through our own efforts.

I have found it to be one of the best guides for discovering the moment to moment awareness which leads us to becoming attuned to our natural state of being - which I call "living meditation".

The whole goal of meditation is to connect us to the field of all beauty, awareness and conscious intelligence that has created you and of all the cosmos. And the goal is to discover that you are NOT ONLY connected to the creative intelligence that dreamed the cosmos, but YOU ARE the same creative intelligence that dreamed the cosmos. In exactly the same way that a seed contains the tree.

The Vijnana Bhairava Tantra was written down long ago as a manual to point spiritual aspirants to the moment by moment opportunities for us to open to vast cosmic creative intelligence that lives through us.

The text was written as a dialogue between "Lord Bhairava" (a representation of cosmic intelligence) and his Consort and reflection "Bhairavi" after she asked him his view of the nature of reality and awakening to our true nature.

My friend Lorin Roche translated this ancient knowledge into a book called "The Radiance Sutras" from which I quote the first four verses for your benefit here.

My long time friend Jessica McCrea is a wonderful therapist based in Boulder, CO.

Her latest blog entry really spoke to me:

"Making Changes the Stick

For years, I have been on a quest for the most efficient and effective way of helping clients move through whatever holds them back. I finally landed on a technique called "Brainspotting". This is a new and (I believe) vastly improved iteration of EMDR (see "What is EMDR" in my Resources to learn more).
With this user-friendly method, I get to witness my clients quickly process and release distressing experiences and patterns.
Another remarkable thing about Brainspotting is that it can help cultivate present-moment awareness and peace of mind. I see one client after another come to a deep sense of knowing. They start to move toward their life goals in a more purposeful way, becoming happier in so doing.
At a time when many are withering from the constriction that comes with the fear of insecurity, discovering the capacity for profound expansive shift is especially valuable now.
In fact, making such shifts is also a service to others. The book "Developing Mind" is a complex, yet very readable book. I highly recommend to anyone who is interested in an integrated understanding of development of our personalities, emotional communication and human relationships = and the role that growth and complexity of the various components of the brain play in the process.

One big takeaway that I got is how patterns of interaction between attachment relationships with parents, caregivers in early life set patterns in motion based on chemical, neurological pathways in phases of brain development. That being said - the brain and emotional fabric of the personality continue to evolve over one's lifetime. Many in our society continue to believe that "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" or "that's just how so-and-so is" with respect to deeply rooted emotional patterns and challenging dynamics. To the contrary - the author points out that the mind, emotions and brain have plasticity throughout life giving new life and possibility in relationship and lifelong learning.

Furthermore - the current obsession with online social networking as a tool for interaction and group evolution are of great interest to me.

Along the lines of group interaction and evolution, the following quote really stood out for me:

"Functioning in a complex social network enhances people's capacity to survive as individuals, reproduce, and create a group of like-minded individuals who share such a capacity. This can be seend as a form of interindividual integration, in which an individual becomes a member of a community beyond the dyadic relationships of attachment and friendship. The potential for such a group to become a functionally cohesive system of individuals will enhance the chances of that group's surviving in competition with isolated humans or with groups that cannot process such social communication signals as well. Such shared mentalizing abilities permit the group to function as a cohesive system composed of connected individuals.

This allows for a "group state" to be achieved, which can facilitate the development of a highly effective problem-solving system to meet challenges in a world filled with competition. Being a member of a group in this way confers a sense of safety, security, and stability on an individual. A number of studies suggest complex relationships among early attachment history, experiences with teachers, relationships with friends, and social competence in peer groups. One of these studies has shown for example that peer acceptance and leadership abilities are associated with a history of secure attachments. Relationships, both early and later in life, clearly make a difference as our lives evolve. Overall, these findings support the notion that the individual continues to develop in interaction with an evolving set internal processes as well as social experiences within interpersonal and group relationships."

E.O. Wilson's book "Consilience" is also at the heart of the understandings from this book. I highly recommend both.

Near death account reveals the nature of the black holes and Matrix of Light

My friend Nicholas Harper sent me this interesting account of a man's near-death experience.

I found the account of Mellen-Thomas to be so interesting because many of his experiences aligned perfectly with my meditation experiences and the views of the nature of our world, and the cosmos around us.

In particular I found two key themes that are absolutely consistent with experiences I have had, and information that I have learned from healers, mystics and books.

One key theme is the way that the "Light" that he encountered helped him travel to other realms.

The light took him through the Sun, and then through the black hole at the center of the galaxy to travel to other realms.

This has been the same as my inner guidance and healing work has revealed.

I'll quote Mellen-Thomas, because his account is beautiful.

"I asked to see the rest of the Universe; beyond our solar system, beyond all human illusion. The Light then told me that I could go with the Stream. I did, and was carried Through the Light at the End of the Tunnel. I felt and heard a series of very soft sonic booms. What a rush!"

"Suddenly I seemed to be rocketing away from the planet on this stream of Life. I saw the earth fly away. The solar system, in all its splendor, whizzed by and disappeared. At faster than light speed, I flew through the center of the galaxy, absorbing more knowledge as I went. I learned that this galaxy, and all of the Universe, is bursting with many different varieties of LIFE. I saw many worlds. The good news is that we are not alone in this Universe!"

"As I rode this stream of consciousness through the center of the galaxy, the stream was expanding in awesome fractal waves of energy. The super clusters of galaxies with all their ancient wisdom flew by. At first I thought I was going somewhere; actually traveling. But then I realized that, as the stream was expanding, my own consciousness was also expanding to take in everything in the Universe! All creation passed by me. It was an unimaginable wonder! "I was in pre-creation, before the Big Bang. I had crossed over the beginning of time/the First Word/the First vibration. I was in the Eye of Creation. I felt as if I was touching the Face of God. It was not a religious feeling. Simply I was at one with Absolute Life and Consciousness."

He discusses a little about the nature of black holes and the grid of light here:

"Do you know what is on the other side of a Black Hole? We are; our galaxy, which has been reprocessed from another Universe. In its total energy configuration, the galaxy looked like a fantastic city of lights. All energy this side of the Big Bang is light. Every sub atom, atom, star, planet, even consciousness itself is made of light and has a frequency and/or particle. Light is living stuff. Everything is made of light, even stones. So everything is alive. Everything is made from the Light of God; everything is very intelligent."

"As I rode the stream on and on, I could eventually see a huge Light coming. I knew it was the First Light; the higher Self Light Matrix of our solar system. Then the entire solar system appeared in the Light, accompanied by one of those velvet booms."

"I could see all the energy that this solar system generates, and it is an incredible light show! I could hear the Music of the Spheres. Our solar system, as do all celestial bodies, generates a unique matrix of light, sound and vibratory energies. Advanced civilizations from other star systems can spot life as we know it in the universe by the vibratory or energy matrix imprint. It is child’s play. The earth’s Wonder child (human beings) make an abundance of sound right now, like children playing in the backyard of the universe."

Another key theme is this "matrix of light" of our collective higher Self:

The first one is the "grid of light"

"We all have a higher Self, or an oversoul part of our being. It revealed itself to me in its truest energy form. The only way I can really describe it is that the being of the higher Self is more like a conduit. It did not look like that, but it is a direct connection to the Source that each and every one of us has. We are directly connected to the Source. So the Light was showing me the higher Self matrix. I was not committed to one particular religion. So that is what was being fed back to me during my life after death experience."

"As I asked the Light to keep clearing for me, to keep explaining, I understood what the higher Self matrix is. We have a grid around the planet where all the higher Selves are connected. This is like a great company, a next subtle level of energy around us, the spirit level, you might say. Then, after a couple of minutes, I asked for more clarification. I really wanted to know what the universe is about, and I was ready to go at that time. I said “I am ready, take me.”

"Then the Light turned into the most beautiful thing that I have ever seen: a mandala of human souls on this planet. Now I came to this with my negative view of what was happening on the planet. So as I asked the Light to keep clarifying for me, I saw in this magnificent mandala how beautiful we all are in our essence, our core. We are the most beautiful creations."

"The human soul, the human matrix that we all make together is absolutely fantastic, elegant, exotic, everything. I just cannot say enough about how it changed my opinion of human beings in that instant. I said, “Oh, God, I did not know how beautiful we are.” At any level, high or low, in whatever shape you are in, you are the most beautiful creation, you are."

"The revelations coming from the Light and seemed to go on and on, then I asked the Light, “Does this mean that Mankind will be saved?” Then, like a trumpet blast with a shower of spiraling lights, the Great Light spoke, saying, “Remember this and never forget; you save, redeem and heal yourself. You always have. You always will. You were created with the power to do so from before the beginning of the world.”"

Follow your intuition - and use tools, wisely!

Many people use the tarot, astrology, pendulums, etc. to get guidance on which direction to take in their lives.

Divination has been a core part of humanity for many generations.

Yet I have often felt a little hesitation to embrace fully any system, or outer authority, or message from cards as "absolute."

These tools are simply that, tools. Guideposts.

I am at a friends home and reading a book on his shelf "The Book of Shadows" and the author, Phyllis Currot speaks to this directly:

She speaks of her own experience with these tools:

"... as I became more proficient in their use, I began to see that the idea that life was predetermined, or already lived, is simply untrue. These oracles, these divining tools, are like a lighthouse to a ship at sea. They tell you where the shore is, where the rocks lie, offering guidance in a storm or on a dark and starless night. But ultimately, the decision as to how to chart your course is your own. Do you sail or motor, tack or run for a long haul? Do you head for port or push on? Your choices, your free will, your expectations, fears longings, beliefs all affect the outcome of events. A divinatory tool provides you information regarding forces, possibilities, and probabilities so you can make wise decisions. Most important, awareness, courage, compassion, and growth come from making your own choices and learning from them, not abandoning your responsibility to some mechanistic prediction. This was [is] the reals magical journey to maturity and to the divine."

I couldn't agree more.

In market economics during the current financial crisis, and the rewriting the sourcecode to civilization, these principals apply!

We are all leaders! It is definitely up to each one of us.

This is a paper I wrote for a class in High School.

The Supreme State

Nietzsche mentions states of mind which transcend our day to day experiences in his essay. [1] He mentions the feeling of "complete oneness with the essence of the universe" [2] but he doesn't describe the nature of that experience. This "vision of mystical oneness" [3] is an awareness of the unity of all objects in the universe. [4] It is an experience and not an idea; it is a deeply felt and complex understanding. Discussing this complex experience in words is a formidable task because this experience is beyond words. The experience of oneness with the universe is known as "the mystical experience of the collective" [5]and the one who experiences it constantly is is called is a mystic. Thus the mystical experience which Nietzsche mentioned is an awareness or an understanding that everything in the universe is one substance.

Nietzsche mentions mystical experience throughout his writing on the polarities of personality in Greek art. He relates mystical experiences to art and its creation. He gives examples of situations where a person may occasionally experience "complete oneness with the essence of the universe." [6]Nietzsche talks about the intellectual and the ecstatic aspects of man's personality. He says that a person while in the ecstatic mood will experience oneness with the universal power. Nietzsche says:

"Each of his gestures betokens enchantment; through him sounds a supernatural power, the same power which makes the animals speak and the earth render up milk and honey." [7]

Nietsche is writing metaphorically here. He is saying a man in this state of oneness is filled with delight and enchantment. While in this state he feels the power of the universe within himselfe and therefore it works through him. He is saying this power is "supernatural" because it is beyond the normal every day experience of most people. This power is the power which dwells in all creatures and objects.

One may wonder "what is the universe according to the mystical viewpoint?" From a mystical viewpoint all sentient and insentient objects, all people, and all the experiences are pervaded by universal power. This universal power is the life force of everything that exists. An analogy is used to describe this. Imagine a row of light bulbs are powered by the same electricity. Similarly every object and creature derives its existence and has its root in one source.

Einstein used the ideas of unity when he made his unified field theory. [8] His theory states that the forces that work in the atom and the forces which work on the cosmic, galactic scale are part of a "deeper reality which under girds both." [9] This "deeper reality" is believed to be an underlying energy which encompasses all forces of nature. Einstein's theory leads to a far reaching viewpoint where "the entire universe appears as one elemental field." [10] When Einstein says that the universe is "one elemental field" he implies that everything is connected by an underlying power. This underlying power has name in most cultures and religions the Chinese call it Chi, the East Indians call it Shakti or Brahman, the Christians call it God, and others call it universal consciousness. In this discussion we will use the terms universal power or God.

Mystics experience this universal power as a living conscious force. One may ask "What is a mystic and what is his state of mind?" A mystic is one who always experiences the living power of the entire universe within himself as well as within every sentient and insentient object. He has acquired a constant awareness of equality or as Lincoln Barnett says; "A knowledge of the ultimate immutable essence that undergirds the mutable illusory world." [11] He is saying that this knowledge is an awareness of the universal principle which is the substratum of all activity in the universe. This awareness is a connection to the conscious universal power which is within us and the universe.

This "mystical experience" is not just a dry understanding or awareness. It is accompanied by a sense of delight, joy and peace. "Utter peace and wild delight, every pleasure state known to man's normal consciousness are inadequate to this description of this joy." [12]

The mystic revels in his awareness of unity. He sees that creatures, people, and objects are pervaded by his own soul. As a result of this feeling he experiences a deep sense of peace, clarity and joy.

Here is a poem by Christian writer and theologian George Macdonald "All about us, in earth and air, wherever eye or ear can reach, there is a power ever breathing itself forth in signs, now in a daisy, now in a wind-waft, a cloud, a sunset; a power that holds constant and sweetest relation with the dark and silent world within us. The same God who is in us, and upon whose tree we are the buds, if the yet the flowers, also is all about us-- inside the spirit; outside, the world. And the two are ever trying to meet in us; and when they meet, then the sign without and the longing within, become one in light; and the man can no more walketh in darkness, but knoweth whither he goeth." [13]

Macdonald is describing the mystical experience. He says that everything is pervaded by God or the universal power. God exists outside all about us as the universe and God exists inside us as spirit. When one experiences that God is within him as well as outside he knows who he is. He knows that his souls is one with that power, that God who is within every human being. The mystic feels, "I am one with the universe and the universe is in me."

There are countless people who have acquired the "vision of mystical oneness." [14] In all traditions, cultures, and times there have been mystics. Buddha, Swami Muktananda, Jesus, St.John of the Cross, Lao-Tzu, St. Theresa of Avila, Plato, Aristotle, Gandhi, Alfred Einstein, William Blake, are just a few of the mystics of the past.

The feeling of "complete oneness with the essence of the universe" is not limited to mystics alone. It can be experienced by anyone. Anyone can experience it because "In each human being dwells an infinite power, the root of the universe." [16]

Since that universal power is within everything in the universe it is also within every human being as well. An eastern mystic speaks to that conscious power in a poem:

"Although You are everywhere, You dwell most specifically in the heart of a human being. I have come to know that You alone exist in conscious beings as well as inert matter." [16]

He is saying that the universal power is in the entire universe and it exists also within every single human being.

One may ask "If God is in everything and God is in my own heart why don't I experience him?" Eastern mystics say that we are "caught by the veil of Maya" which is the "illusion hiding the reality (universal power) that lies beneath material surfaces." [17] Instead of perceiving unity and equality in the universe we perceive everything as separate from ourselves and others. We don't recognize the universal principle which is within us and everything else as a result of this "illusion."

One may wonder "Do mystics just sit around and 'experience' this state or do they bring it into their daily lives?" If we look into the lives of mystics of the past such as Jesus, Buddha, St. Theresa of Avila, St John of the Cross, Gandhi and many others, we will see that they lived lives of spreading this state to others. They related their experience of universal oneness and brotherhood to others. They taught that man should live life while respecting others as his own self. The mystics were living examples of the potential that man can achieve by understanding that his own self and the world are the same.

This mystical state is the source of great inspiration in all activities of life. Evelyn Underhill said that artists, scientists and musicians use various ways to transcend their minds to bring new inspiration to their art. She says that "the mystic experience is the key to them all." [18] This is so because the mystical experience is a connection to the universal "creative power." Einstein said that "The cosmic religious experience is the strongest and the noblest and mainspring of scientific research."[19] He is saying that the mystical experience gives some scientists great inspiration and insight into the source of the universe. Thus the experience of unity with the universe is an awareness which is useful and dynamic in worldly life.

In looking at my own experience I can see that I have experienced glimpses of the mystical state. It happened once when I was backpacking. When I was walking I felt a sense of being connected to the world around me. It wasn't like a dream or a hallucination; it was a vivid clear and conscious experience. I felt that the trees, the rocks, the ground, and the sky were all part of me.

The experience was natural, simple, and clear. I felt a deep sense of stillness of mind; it was a clarity of mind which I had never experienced before. I felt that the soul within me was also the "soul" within the objects around me.

The experience lasted for a few moments and then I felt normal again. This "glimpse" of the mystical state was the most simple and clear understanding I have had of myself and the world. Out of this experience and a few others like it, has grown an interest in mysticism and God. I briefly experienced a state of unity which mystics experience all the time.

The subject of mystical experience is a complicated one. It involves using a wide range of terminology and ideas to describe the experience. Perhaps the discussion of the mystical experience is so complicated because it is so "simple" that it can't be put into words. It is an awareness, and understanding, of the universe as one divine principle, nothing more.

Collective Bodhisattva Metamorphosis 2.0

"In Buddhist tradition, many enlightened souls elect to return to this world and serve as bodhisattvas. They teach and give aid to alleviate the suffering of the unawakened. The Buddhists frequently use the metaphor of the metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a butterfly to describe poetically this transformation of the individual. Could it be that the entire human species began its existence as a collective caterpillar?
